This report outlines the progress and outcomes of DiCE Task 3.1, which focuses on the development and manufacturing of smart collection boxes and associated digital solutions for reverse logistics. The primary aim is to create a versatile, sensor-based collection box designed to facilitate the effective collection of digital health devices while remaining commercially scalable for broader applications.
The design criteria for the smart collection box emphasize safety, security, compact size, low maintenance, durability, flexibility for diverse products collection and modularity. Essential smart features include product detection and identification, fill level measurements, access control and data connectivity. For use in the healthcare sector, one of the primary functions of the box is to securely collect digital health devices and pharmaceutical products, effectively addressing challenges associated with sharps and hazardous materials.
Construction with a robust powder-coated steel casing (approximately 3mm thick), the box is resistant to forced entry and durable for placement in public spaces. Equipped with a secure return hatch, item returns are facilitated strictly through product identification or user authentication, maintaining strict access control. The dimension of the collection box (1550 mm x 500 mm x 500 mm) is optimized for placement in space constrained environments (e.g. pharmacies), while providing sufficient storage to minimize the frequency of emptying.
To reduce maintenance needs, the design minimizes moving parts, especially electromechanical parts. The modular design allows for easy repairs and parts replacements by local technicians, as well as the capability for future enhancements, such as the addition of sensors, screens and other functionalities, ensuring flexibility in meeting evolving requirements.The box’s smart features are enabled through a set of sensors. Smart features include a tagging system scanner (e.g. a QR code scanner) for product identification, an image sensor for item verification, and an ultrasonic sensor for fill level monitoring. All collected data is transmitted to a backend system/cloud architecture and can be shared with third parties to enhance reverse logistics operations and to incentivise returns.
User interaction is streamlined via an intuitive light panel that guides end users through the return process, indicated by colour signals. Certain physical specifications of the box can be adapted without compromising the digital functionalities; for example, the box can be enlarged, integrated into walls, or have its materials and return hatch size changed. New modules, such as screens, thermal printer for receipts and payment terminals, can also be seamlessly added.
Safety tested and CE certified, the collection box is primed for serial production with two manufacturing partners in Norway.
